That was really close on time, since I had to wait for ~20 minutes for everything to be created and update. At the end the 'gcloud container operations wait $UPGRADE_ID' and the requisite 'export UPGRADE_ID' commands didn't work for some reason (I did verify it was still updating at the time). I also had to manually update the pods with other commands because it wouldn't upgrade otherwise - then wait for the credential rotation to complete. I finished the lab with about 5 seconds to spare.
