could not move past the cloud shell lab because of the constant error messages for the bucket creation

It was nearly impossible to complete the lab and get 100%. The lab was not connecting with the Google Console - I received notification in the console I had completed a task but then the task would not get marked as complete. The Google Cloudshell was also extremely awful to work with; it was bugging out and crashing every second command.
