"/var/www/html/" did not exist because "/var/www/html" simply isn't auto-created by Debian's nginx package as that's Debian policy — it belongs to the nginx metapackage's default site, and Debian leaves creating the docroot to you or your config management). I had to manually fix it by running "student-03-265458d93cc6@first-vm:~$ # 1. Create the directory structure sudo mkdir -p /var/www/html # 2. Create a simple index file echo "<h1>Hello from Nginx</h1>" | sudo tee /var/www/html/index.html # 3. Ensure Nginx has permission to read it (usually owned by www-data) sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/html # 4. Restart Nginx to be safe sudo systemctl restart nginx <h1>Hello from Nginx</h1> student-03-265458d93cc6@first-vm:~$ grep -r "root" /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/ student-03-265458d93cc6@first-vm:~$"
