Overview

This lab walks you through the process to create and execute a SQL workflow in Dataform to load data in BigQuery.

Learning objectives

  1. Create a Dataform repository.
  2. Create and initialize a Dataform development workspace.
  3. Create and execute a SQL workflow.
  4. View execution logs in Dataform.

Setup

For each lab, you get a new Google Cloud project and set of resources for a fixed time at no cost.

  1. Sign in to Google Skills using an incognito window.

  2. Note the lab's access time (for example, 1:15:00), and make sure you can finish within that time.
There is no pause feature. You can restart if needed, but you have to start at the beginning.

  3. When ready, click Start lab.

  4. Note your lab credentials (Username and Password). You will use them to sign in to the Google Cloud Console.

  5. Click Open Google Console.

  6. Click Use another account and copy/paste credentials for this lab into the prompts.
If you use other credentials, you'll receive errors or incur charges.

  7. Accept the terms and skip the recovery resource page.

Task 1. Create a Dataform repository

  1. In the Console, expand the Navigation menu, then select BigQuery > Dataform.

  2. Click CREATE REPOSITORY.

  3. On the Create repository page, do the following:

    1. In the Repository ID field, enter quickstart-repository.

    2. In the Region list, select .

    3. Click CREATE.

    4. Once the repository is created, you will see the Dataform service account. Copy and save the service account. You will need to use it later to assign necessary permissions.

    5. Ignore the warning regarding the role needed to execure queries. You will grant the necessary permissions in a later step using the service account name you copied in the prior step.

    6. Click Go to Repositories.

Note: If you get permission denied error related to API request wait for few minutes and create the repository again.

Task 4. Create a SQLX file for table definition

In the following sections, you define the table type in a SQLX file, and then write a SELECT statement to define the table structure within the same file.

  1. In the Files pane, next to definitions, click the More menu, and then select Create file.
