The instruction was misleading. The security group created during the lab only allows incoming port 3389 (RDP) connection; whereas, the launched instance type is Linux. My initial connection failed because the Linux OS is normally connected via port 22 (SSH).

This is one of the more detail and interesting lab, but the lab time is not long enough to explore materials. Plus, I feel the attaching the internet gateway didn't have enough explanation on how it works.
