there was a problem with nodejs installation so couldn't complete the lab.

There's a mistake in the instructions: the vm boot disk should use Debian 10 rather than Debian 9. The commands that follow to install Node don't work with Debian 9. Also, what I didn't like too much about this lab is all the waiting for the various commands to complete.

I followed the lab step by step but it doesn't work. I think the lab might be outdated for the latest version of gcloud

Contrary to the instruction given for the VM creation, choosing Debian 9 will cause the software installation to fail. Use Debian 10 (which was the automatically selected one by default as of writing) for the subsequent commands to go through successfully.
