After again going through the lab I found out that the solution to my earlier problem was just reloading the page after creating the custom query data source. After doing that I could use the data from the second data source without issue and the lab software was able to correctly check my progress.

Last "Check my Progress" step did not work although I had created the chart based on custom query. I also had problems because the name of the custom query data source was the same as the original data source and Data Studio was apparently confused by that. The last one only got solved by renaming the data source and then reloading the entire page. I assume both problems could be solved by adding a step to the lab where the student is told to add a custom name of the custom query data source *before* creating it.
