The default storageClass is not set to standard somehow but standard-rwo. For Task 1, the pvc was Pending for a long time and didn't create the PV automatically. I had to inject storageClassName: standard and then it worked. However, the statefulsets did create the PV automatically using standard-rwo; just not the pod itself when using standard-rwo by default.
