SSH into the VM does not work with just the given instructions, so I had to work around it. This is how I solved it: gcloud compute instances add-metadata mc-server \ --zone=us-west1-a \ --metadata enable-oslogin=FALSE Adding the metadata for startup/shutdown scripts at the end most of the time seemed to crash the tab (ie the action of adding a metadata field), so I just re-tried around 10 times to make it work
