Great lab, and really showcases the power of big query with ML. The queries do seem a little unusual, lots of sub-selects, something I would normally try to avoid. But this may just be the right way to write SQL do query when using ML methods in a big query sql statement. At some point, I'll just have to put it aside for future reading.
