The VM instance that were already created when I started the lab were in the incorrect zones: mynet-eu-vm and mynet-us-vm where both in us-central1f instead of europe-west1-c and us-central1-c respectively

mynet-eu-vm is created in the same region and zone as mynet-us-vm in us-central1 and us-central1-f . Hence I was able to connect from vm-applicance to mynet-eu-vm as well. Which has created the confusion.
