There is a failure with the region. The running cluster is located in us-east4, not us-east4-a (as described in the first export command).

Some oddities with the auto-scaling cluster. It took quite a while for the first node to come up, then it scaled to 3 nodes when I deployed the stateful set, but it kept evicting/recreating pods as the new nodes spun up. It took a while for everything to settle down. It was disconcerting and I wasn't expecting that for a deployment this small.

Got some weird kubectl errors when the cluster was starting, the metrics pod was missing.
