The commands in the lab had an issue: the ISTIO_VERSION needs to be set to at least 1.4.6 now if you're using --addons=Istio with a recent version of GKE. The code uses 1.2.2 which fails to work against 1.4.6.

a note should be mentioned that when exporting the version of Istio that you must ensure that this matches the version that is installed on GKE. This lab mentions version 1.2.2; however the current version of istio installed on GKE is 1.4.6 If you install mismatched versions this will result in errors.

there is a istio version mismtach issue on this lab - when the GKE cluster was launched all the istio services installed was on v1.4.6 (by default). However in the bookstore app install steps, the Istioctl version was specified to 1.2.2. This causes a problem that "istioctl kub-inject" would throw out an error -- "inject: 175: function "protoToJSON" not defined. In order to fix this, I had to change the istioctl version to 1.4.6 to math the service versions installed on the GKE cluster.

Couldn't really rate the experience as there was some backend issue. Will rate it when i comeback after the issue is fixed.
