the port on the IPv4 service going to the not-us backend was randomly allocated - mine was 79. This meant that I got a timeout when hitting the ALB. When I changed it to 80, everything worked. I don't think this step was documented anywhere in the lab steps.

I successfully completed the lab but this was incredibly disappointing. Even after sending traffic and stopping apache I couldn't see any evidence for auto scaling. On a lab about auto scaling I would have expected to see something actually auto scale!
