instance-group-1 and instance-group-2 had Autoscaling enabled which lead to additional instances to be started. Having multiple instances in each group made the instructions confusing. Worse the additional instances eventually lead to the lab being terminated (which happens rather quietly) which lead to more confusion and being forced to restart the lab. After a few attempts I discovered the issue and disabled Autoscaling on the instance groups so that I could complete the lab.
