The getDefaultInstance() we use in "private Datastore datastore = DatastoreOptions.getDefaultInstance().getService();" was not defined in the package "com.google.datastore.v1.client.DatastoreOptions" that was imported. had to explicitly import "import com.google.cloud.datastore.DatastoreOptions" to make the "getDefaultInstance()" work
