This was the second attempt at the lab. The Cloud shell disconnected and would not reconnect after I had done half the lab. Clicking on the icon again seems to create a new project and wiped everything I had done.

the online editor was completely unresponsive and lost the connection frequently. The app provided in the lab didn't work. I tried again and it fails with this error: 2 UNKNOWN: Getting metadata from plugin failed with error: Could not refresh access token: Invalid response from the metadata service
