There seems to be a bug with SNS. Even after confirming the email subscription for the topic, CloudWatch was not able to find the topic. I sent a manual notification and things clicked into place after that.

For the CloudWatch lambda code, the current version of the canary function relies on environment variable setup, so updating the lab to use these settings instead would be helpful.
