Remove the allow-custom firewall rules - Step is incorrect. It should be the ICMP rule to be removed. Check the Documentation is correct.

Had a strange bug where navigating to the Compute Engine > VM instances displayed a large "X" icon blocking the top left of the screen, it was removed when I went back to VPC
