In order to enhance readability and to be POSIX compliant you should no longer use backticks to encapsulate commands. The modern and preferred syntax is $(command). This allows much easier command encapsulation without escaping multiple backticks. Additionally instead of leveraging a series of semicolon delimited commands you can instead do a cat << EOF > ~ec2-user/foo.sh #!/bin/sh # commands here EOF chmod 755 ~ec2-user/foo.sh Makes things a bit more readable and includes the shebang in the script.

there is some error with the REGION of the bucket - please take a look and correct this. I had to still use manually --region parameter in my scrip to copy the site to S3 as well as in the cron file
