It just needs to be changed to use the more recent versions of EMR. The steps did not say to change the security group to open port 22. But thanks for giving me credit back to try again because of the port issue.

Several of the instructions were out of date. In particular: no mention that you need to enable port 22 in the SG before you can ssh (perhaps it was default previously) and the details for viewing ganglia seemed to be completely wrong - looks as though things have changed in EMR.

Couldnt get into ganglia, connection refused even though port 80 was added to master security group. Too bad as I wanted to see it in action
