wasn't able to connect to web server after launching the instance. attempted to restart tomcat and other basic troubleshooting/verified sg rules were correct.

The image for GeoServer doesn't contain config for auto startup for the Tomcat server. Thus auto scaling instances won't have the GeoServers automatically ready to service requests.

Page 20 of Launching Geo Server on AWS, Step 136b, the datasource name in that step ("pg state") shouldn't have a space as that causes XML errors. Maybe call it "pg_state" instead with an underscore. The lab is good.
