DNS pre-configured in the Linux EC2 instance was not responding/accessible. I had to add a public DNS in to /etc/resolv.conf to get things to work (ie. install httpd and php)

So much more to cover on EC2 configuration, I suppose it is hard to pack into a single lab. Great for beginners, but if you're studying for a certification you probably already have spun up a number of instances, so basic config options don't really help that much.
