it wasn't really clear if the image was actually being retrieved from s3 or cloudfront. Because the labl is timed I felt pressured to rush through and click all the buttons without really thinking about what I was doing. Something that proves that the image came from the cdn would be great

Should be clear in the instructions that an IMAGE or media file is desired - I uploaded random binary data and had to re-do this later which was a pain. Suggest a note saying "have a non-confidential jpeg handy for this lab".

The Lab does not tell you what to do with the created .html file. You need to upload the created .html file to the S3 bucket (same as image file) and make sure to designate it as "public". You also have to select that the S3 bucket will be a "static web-page" Using the created domain name from CloudFrontDomainName/xxx.html will then populate.
