1) The two zones you pick have to be in different regions, otherwise the deployment won't be able to create all the VMs (you'll hit the 8-IP-per-region quota) 2) Tried waiting for the load balancer 404 errors to go away (the "It may take several minutes for the service to become operational") but they never did. I dug around a bit and found that the instance groups needed the http (or httpstatic) port name mapped to 8080 (8080 based on what I saw when I ssh'd in to the boxes and checked for LISTENing ports). Specifically, all of the IGs had the error "To allow this instance group to receive traffic from the load balancer advanced-configuration-application-urlmap, map the port name http to a port number.". Once mapped, the load balanced URL started working.
