there were 2 cpu usage options in metrics. As a beginner i choose the first one, this one did not display anything, i wondered if i did everything right ? After choosing the second one, it worked.

Even though I specified the metric to monitor (which also took a bit of time to figure out -- typing in "vm instance" did not really display proper items in the drop down, it should have been smth like "gce"), the chart was empty.
