this was a bit confusing, not helped when cloudshell (and its editor) died during the lab. I had to guess which steps to repeat. Eventually it worked.

Rubbish, the code is not align with the snipped provided. Old fashion angular js using firebase version 7.2.3 when the code provided by firebase is 8.2.3 disgusting for a google training course .... Definetly not wasting my time fixing thesample.
