The "Persist a derived table" task was a bit confusing because although I could see the PDT show up in the PDT admin page, the PDT never got built and the query never changed away from using a CTE. Even in the screenshot in the lab manual, there is a CTE. So I didn't really see it in action, but I got the idea.
