the bash profile may have had to be sourced because the exported variables were not there on the new machine as a string in bashrc (or in my environment variables)

There were a number of errors related to the 'unique' identifier to be used. I eventually solved this by just cutting larger and larger parts off the identifier; maybe give a number of very small 'unique' ids as examples?
