I also left these comments in a support thread with qwiklab: I eventually discovered the issue, but a couple of pieces of feedback that would make this less painful for the next students: 1. Include a step to doublecheck that the project id is set appropriately in the gcloud config. This was the first issue that I hit, and I set the project ID normally to resolve ($ gcloud config set project <project-id>) 2. The prefix needs to be SHORT because the resulting VM name cannot be 64+ chars. The instructions at that point leads one to believe that your chosen UNIQUE_ID cannot be > 64 chars, which isn't accurate.
