I have now tried 3 times and am able to get the vm instance working correctly but the lab only shows 25/100 complete

Bad, ugly lab task checker! It was not mentioned in the task that instance should be in the same zone/region as "lab-monitor" instance. But checker seems only accepts solutions where instance in the same zone or region. (((((((
