WTF. The Task 1 instructions are total crap. Is only us-central1-a valid? WHY? Why can't I create a valid configuration with the Console? Also the instructions for the Cluster auto-scaler are dumb. The check is on "1 to 6 nodes" PER ZONE. From the instructions I's say you wanted to have "1 to 6 nodes" for the complete cluster!
