Instruction is clear. My load balancer failed however, when the health checks failed, and there was no indication on what to do to solve this problem.

Might be my ignorance, but after getting the LB setup, I stopped and re-started the instances. They did not appear to get picked up by LB automatically, I had to remove the instance from the LB and re-add it before it recognized that the instance had restarted.
