Very basic introduction to creating an EC2 instance via the AWS Console and ssh'ing into the instance. It only took 15 minutes to get through the steps, so use the extra time to explore a bit.

the auto generated key-pair looks set with pass-phrase which I couldn't find within the 30 mins. after all, I couldn't login to the instance...
