putty .ppk file would not authorize without entering a userid/password. Will try again on a different network to see if it was an issue with port 22.

had to refresh the AWS console page to see the instance change from pending/initializing to ready/running.

the layout window doesn't need the big margin at the bottom with the two rows of links like "About, Blog through Buy Credits" or they should be arranged in a line instead of in columns because it reduces the viewing pane of the instructuions.
